The Kapyderm Dermotricology line includes seven tonics across three families. Nutritive tonics (Base, Alogenic) are aqueous leave-ons; Alogenic adds Methyl Nicotinate and the warming response. Where the tonic sits — in-center and at home
The tonic has two roles in the Dermotricology routine, and understanding both is what makes it useful.
In-center, the tonic is a step in the professional routine. After the cleansing base has cleared the scalp and brought it to the right pH, and often alongside the Organic Turba and ampoule steps, the appropriate tonic is applied by the Technician — selected to match what the trichoscopy evaluation showed.
At home, the tonic is the daily follow-up. Between sessions, the client applies the tonic as a leave-on. Because it is applied daily and never rinsed, the home tonic keeps the routine going between visits rather than leaving a gap. It pairs with the Kapyderm supplement line for a topical-and-internal routine.
So the tonic is not a home-care afterthought — it is used in both settings. Choosing the right one for each is the practitioner's most frequent decision in this part of the range.
Where the market has moved
Scalp care is one of the faster-growing categories in professional hair care, and the growth sits in the model this system is built around: an in-center treatment followed by home maintenance.
The pattern in that data mirrors the model described above: a premium in-center treatment, with retail follow-up growing alongside it. Kline PRO is salon-channel research, so it describes the professional market specifically — which is the relevant one here.
An earlier version of this article carried a hair-tonic market projection ($1.5B in 2024 rising to $2.8B by 2033) and an 8.6% annual growth rate for hair-loss scalp care. Neither could be traced to a primary source, so both are gone. The Kline PRO figures above are what we can actually stand behind, and they say enough.
Scalp tonic vs. scalp serum — the distinction
Clients and many professionals use "tonic" and "serum" interchangeably. They generally are not the same thing, and the difference matters when building a routine.
A scalp tonic targets the scalp and roots — typically lighter in texture, water-based or botanical-oil-based, and made for daily leave-on contact. Its job is the scalp.
A scalp serum, in most of the market, is a more concentrated formula whose primary target is the hair fiber — mid-lengths and ends — for smoothing and shine. Applied to the scalp, many are heavier than a scalp routine wants.
What matters is target and contact time, not the word on the label. A Dermotricology tonic is made for the scalp and for daily leave-on use — which is why it, rather than a fiber serum, occupies the daily step in this routine.
"Skinification" — the trend Dermotricology has been for decades
The defining movement in hair care right now is what the industry calls skinification: treating the scalp like facial skin, with the same attention to microbiome balance, barrier function, pH and irritation that skincare gives the face.
Worth stating plainly: this is what Dermotricology has always been. The idea that the scalp is skin, that its pH and barrier and microbial balance matter to hair, and that it deserves a sequenced routine rather than a single shampoo, is the founding premise of the discipline — formulated in Spain since 1989.
Much of the market is reframing hair care around scalp biology because the trend data points that way. The tonic system already works this way — condition-matched actives, barrier support and pH-correct formulation, applied as a routine rather than a single product.
The trend has also surfaced a fair criticism worth repeating: heavy essential-oil loading used to create a scalp "tingle," with the tingle sold as proof the product works. It isn't — a tingle can simply be irritation. The warming response from Alogenic and Fungi-Activ is a different thing: it is Methyl Nicotinate producing vasodilation, a documented pharmacological effect of that ingredient class.[2] That said, a warming response is evidence that the ingredient is doing what it does — not evidence that hair will grow.
A customizable system — built to the individual
The most important thing to understand about the tonic range is that it is not a fixed, one-size routine. It is a system designed to be matched and combined to the individual's skin and scalp type, condition and stage.
Every skin type is accounted for. Dry, oily, combination, sensitive, reactive, congested, flaking — each has a tonic, an oil and a corrective option that fits, and each can be sequenced with the appropriate cleansing base and ampoule. A dry sensitive scalp and an oily congested one do not follow the same routine; they follow routines built from the same system, assembled differently. That is the point of seven tonics across three families rather than a single hero product.
This is what a certified Technician of Dermotricology does: evaluate the individual presentation through trichoscopy, then build the routine from the system. The line is the toolkit; the routine is matched to the person.
The three tonic families
The seven tonics are not a flat list of alternatives. They resolve into three families, each with a different vehicle and a different job.
Family 1 — Nutritive tonics
The two aqueous tonics share a botanical base of soy, arnica, watercress, white nettle, willow bark and rosemary. They differ in one way: whether they also carry Methyl Nicotinate and the warming response that comes with it.
The plain nutritive tonic. A six-botanical base with no Methyl Nicotinate and no warming response, which makes it the everyday choice for sensitive scalps, maintenance phases, and anyone for whom the warming response is unnecessary or unwanted.
General daily use, sensitive scalps, maintenance routines, and any routine where the warming response is not wanted.
Soy (Glycine Soja), arnica, watercress, white nettle, willow bark and rosemary — the shared base.
The same nutritive base with a further layer: Methyl Nicotinate, Panthenol, Salicylic Acid to help keep the follicle opening clear, Hedera Helix (ivy), plus sulfur, potassium iodide and eucalyptol. It produces a warm flush and possible temporary redness — the expected response to Methyl Nicotinate, which usually settles within minutes. The panthenol in this formula has been studied in cultured hair follicle cells, where it raised several growth-associated markers[10] — cell-culture work, not a test of this tonic.
Routines where the warming response is wanted and well tolerated, in diffuse thinning and general scalp care. Not suitable where the scalp is broken, inflamed or reactive.
Methyl Nicotinate, Panthenol, Salicylic Acid, ivy, sulfur, potassium iodide, eucalyptol.
These two are a matched pair. Base is the base; Alogenic is the base plus Methyl Nicotinate. The decision between them is whether the warming response suits this scalp and this client. Where it does, Alogenic takes the daily slot; where the scalp is sensitive or the client dislikes the sensation, Base does. Many routines use both across different phases.
Family 2 — Botanical balancing oils
K1 and K2 sit apart from the rest of the range because they are not aqueous tonics at all — they are botanical oil blends. Wheat germ, sunflower and rosehip oils with rosemary, fenugreek and lemon peel oil. They condition through plant lipids: restoring softness, easing the tight feel of dry skin, and supporting the surface without heavy residue. Neither contains Methyl Nicotinate; neither warms.
The two are nearly identical — the same eight botanicals — balanced differently for two skin realities.
The nourishing oil for skin and scalp that feel dry, tight or depleted. It restores softness while easing the feel of the skin, and absorbs without heavy residue. In the in-center sequence, K1 is the prep step applied before the Organic Turba mask on normal-to-dry presentations.
The same botanical oil blend, balanced for skin and scalp that lean oily, combination or congested but still feel depleted. It absorbs without adding to congestion. In the oily-scalp routine, K2 is the lipid step paired with the aqueous Seboregulator — and in-center, the prep step before Organic Turba on oily presentations.
In the in-center routine, K1 or K2 is applied to the scalp as the prep step before the Organic Turba mask — K1 for dry and sensitive, K2 for oily and congested. This creates the right surface condition for the 20-minute peat mask that follows.
Family 3 — Corrective & purifying tonics
The final family is condition-matched. These three are not general daily products — each is chosen for a particular scalp presentation: excess oiliness, heavy surface scale, or persistent flaking.
The aqueous purifying tonic for oily, grease-prone scalps. A light, fast-absorbing water-based leave-on built on three botanicals with documented sebum-regulating properties — ivy (Hedera helix), watercress (Nasturtium officinale) and burdock root (Arctium majus).[9] It refreshes without a stripped feeling, and contains no Methyl Nicotinate. Where K2 is the lipid balancing step, Seboregulator is the aqueous one.
Oily, grease-prone scalps; midday greasiness; the daily aqueous step in the oily-scalp routine.
Ivy, watercress and burdock root — documented sebum-regulating and soothing properties at the botanical-review level.
The specialist tonic of the range, used occasionally rather than daily. Built on willow bark, birch bark, cade wood oil (Juniperus oxycedrus), sulfur and salicylic acid, it delivers keratolytic action for heavy surface scale and buildup — softening and lifting it so the rest of the routine can reach the skin. Because cade oil is a potent traditional active, KS115 is for adult use only and is not for use on children's skin. Typically once weekly, or as directed by a Technician. Note: heavy scaling has several possible medical causes. This is a cosmetic keratolytic, not a treatment for any of them — if a scalp condition has been diagnosed or is not settling, see a dermatologist.
Heavy surface scale and buildup where softening and lifting is the aim.
Willow bark, birch bark, cade wood oil, sulfur, salicylic acid.
The purifying tonic chosen for flaking and scaling presentations. It combines rosemary, undecylenic-acid chemistry, vegetable iodine, urea and fucus (bladderwrack) with Methyl Nicotinate, so it produces a warming response. In honest disclosure, Fungi-Activ contains Methyl Nicotinate and a synthetic component — named here rather than left in the small print, and it means Fungi-Activ is not a plant-based formula. Note: persistent flaking may be seborrheic dermatitis, psoriasis or another medical condition. This is a cosmetic scalp tonic, not an antifungal medicine and not a treatment for any diagnosed condition — see a dermatologist if flaking is severe or persistent.
Flaking and scaling presentations where a purifying, refreshing leave-on is wanted alongside whatever a physician has advised.

The scalp microbiome — what the research does and doesn't show
If skinification is the headline trend, the scalp microbiome is the science underneath it. The scalp hosts a community of bacteria and fungi, and when that community shifts out of balance — dysbiosis — it is associated with several common scalp conditions.
The honest state of the evidence matters here, because this area is heavily oversold. A 2026 review in the International Journal of Dermatology examined scalp microbiome changes in androgenetic alopecia and describes the findings as preliminary, with results less consistent across studies.[11] The studies also disagree with one another in an important way: some report increases in Malassezia, while other work reports a loss of commensal Malassezia. Both cannot be the general rule.
A great deal of scalp marketing states microbiome claims as settled fact. They are not settled, and anyone selling you certainty here is ahead of the evidence. What the corrective tonic family actually does is more modest and more defensible: it uses condition-matched botanicals to address the surface conditions — excess sebum, heavy scale — that are consistently associated with these presentations. That is a reasonable cosmetic aim. It is not a claim to rebalance anyone's microbiome, and no controlled trial has tested whether these tonics do so.
The research behind the key actives
Below is the published picture for the actives doing the most work — including, in each case, what the study actually tested. None of these studies tested a Kapyderm tonic.
Methyl Nicotinate — the warming ingredient
A nicotinic-acid ester that produces local vasodilation. A study using laser speckle contrast imaging quantified the mechanism, finding NSAID inhibition reduced the perfusion increase by 82%.[2] That study measured skin, not scalp. The scalp-specific evidence is older and smaller: a 1987 study of 10 men found no change with 3% minoxidil but a response in 9 of 10 to a related nicotinate.[3] The limit: increased blood flow is not the same as hair growth, and nothing has measured how much of any other ingredient reaches the follicle as a result.
Salicylic Acid — keratolytic
Salicylic acid is lipophilic, penetrates hair follicles and sebaceous glands, and dissolves keratin plugs — established keratolytic action. A 2025 cohort study in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology is widely cited here, and it is worth reading carefully: it tested a combination product — a pre-gel of salicylic acid, piroctone olamine and zinc PCA plus a cleanser containing salicylic acid, piroctone olamine and an antimicrobial peptide.[1] Piroctone olamine is an antifungal doing part of the work, so the result cannot be credited to salicylic acid alone.
And the headline number is often misquoted. The 80% overall clinical improvement is the figure at 16 weeks. At 4 weeks it was 50%. The 4-week results were the symptom scores: dandruff 2.45 to 1.10, greasiness 2.60 to 1.40 (P<0.01). Twenty patients, no control group, no randomization.
Burdock Root (Arctium) — sebum & soothing
A 2025 review in Frontiers in Pharmacology assessed burdock's anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory properties in immune-mediated skin conditions.[9] Documented sebum-regulating, soothing and antimicrobial activity make it a sensible choice for oily-scalp care. The limit, stated plainly: this is review and pre-clinical evidence — there is no human randomized trial of burdock for oily scalp. We frame it as documented botanical properties, not clinical proof.
Birch Bark (Betula alba) — barrier
A split-face clinical study found a botanical extract outperformed 3% niacinamide on skin hydration and transepidermal water loss, and upregulated the barrier proteins AQP3 and OCLN.[6] The scope note: that study tested Betula alba combined with Empetrum nigrum, so the result belongs to the combination, not birch alone. Birch's bioactives betulin and betulinic acid have separately documented anti-inflammatory activity.[7] Both are facial-skin studies, not scalp.
Cade Oil (Juniperus oxycedrus) — heritage active
One of the oldest topical actives in Mediterranean dermatology, with keratolytic, antipruritic and antimicrobial properties documented in the literature.[8] A botanical relative of coal tar in function. Safety is why it is handled carefully: pure cade oil is not for use on children's skin, which is why KS115 is adult-use only. The limit: this is traditional use plus laboratory characterization, not modern controlled trial evidence.
Rosemary (Rosmarinus) — the botanical anchor
The most studied botanical in the line. A 2015 randomized trial of 100 patients found rosemary oil comparable to minoxidil 2% at six months, with less scalp itching.[4] A 2025 double-blind placebo-controlled trial of 90 participants using phototrichogram measurement reported improvements in growth rate, thickness and density.[5] Two limits: the 2025 trial tested a rosemary-and-lavender blend against a coconut oil control, so its results are not attributable to rosemary alone — and both trials tested rosemary oil at its own concentration, not rosemary leaf extract as one ingredient among nine in a tonic.
We position Methyl Nicotinate precisely: as an ingredient with a documented local vasodilatory effect, which is what produces the warming response — and not as a treatment for pattern hair loss. Accuracy is the point. Overclaiming a single ester as a hair-growth agent would not survive scrutiny, and it isn't how the tonic works.
How the system compares
Most professional and direct-to-consumer scalp lines offer a scalp serum or two. Fewer offer a structured tonic system spanning nutritive, lipid and corrective options. The comparison below is based on publicly published product ranges and ingredient lists as they appeared in August 2026. Ranges and formulas change without notice — check current information before relying on any line. And the essential caveat: no head-to-head trial of these products exists. This is a comparison of what each range offers, not of how well any of them works.

The newer direct-to-consumer wave has raised the ingredient conversation considerably, and several of those brands are genuinely well formulated. They compete on a different axis: a single hero serum sold direct. The structural difference is simply a range assembled to the individual versus one formula for everyone — which is a difference in approach, not a claim that one produces better results than the other.
Where a professional routine does have a practical advantage is measurement. That is a documentation advantage, not proof of efficacy — but it is a real one, and it is not available when someone buys a serum online.
Topical and internal
The tonic works on the scalp surface. The Kapyderm supplement line is taken internally. Pairing a topical routine with nutritional support is a common approach in this category, and the Kapyderm range is built to be used that way — the daily tonic on the scalp, the supplement taken as directed.
What we will not claim: that this combination has been shown to increase hair density. It hasn't been tested. The "gut-hair axis" is an active research area and an interesting one, but the evidence is early, and a supplement is not a treatment for hair loss.

Tonic selection is not made from symptoms alone. A trichoscopy evaluation with the Kapykon camera shows the actual scalp surface — oiliness, congestion, scaling — before the tonic is applied in-center and recommended for home follow-up.
